Karen Eide has been teaching her Encaustic Painting and Mixed Media Lab workshop for the Virginia Museum for the Arts in Richmond and in numerous other locations since 2005.
Encaustic painting is an ancient process that dates back to 5th century BC. Pigmented beeswax is heated on a griddle and applied to rigid panels with brushes. The results yield luminous, richly layered work that has its own unique character. Students will learn classic encaustic painting techniques and explore how to combine them with contemporary processes, such as surface embellishment, image transfer, incising, collaging, and creating marks and images with oil paint, pastels, markers, and inks. It is an ideal complement or stand-alone process for oil painters, printmakers, collagists, sculptors, watercolorists, and other artists. In order for students to continue their exploration of this versatile medium on their own, this process-oriented art lab provides and abundance of information on supply sources, setting up a studio for encaustic work, safety guidelines, framing, and exhibition considerations. For high school and above.
Each location has a specific number of seats available so everyone can work safely and comfortably ~ sign up early to ensure your enrollment as her classes typically sell out. Registration cut-off dates for classes are generally seven days before start date. Cancellation policies vary from location to location and will be listed on registration pages. 
Class size is limited. Come have a fun, inspiring day of creativity! It's food for the soul.

Private Coaching in Encaustics + Mixed Media- Virtual or in-person If you have taken at least one workshop in Encaustic Painting and you have questions to help you move things along - let's work in-person at my studio or via ZOOM. Time slots are available in 1 hour minimum increments @ $60.00 an hour or once a week for 3 weeks (3 hours) for $140.00  Coaching/tutoring is perfect for anyone who has forgotten parts of the process, if you are stuck in the design process, or just have 150 random questions.
