Karen Eide has been teaching her Encaustic Painting & Mixed Media Lab workshops, with rave reviews, since 2005, through the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and independently. Encaustic painting is an ancient process that uses molten, pigmented beeswax to create layered and luminous work. It is a wonderful stand-alone medium or one that is easily combined with a multitude of mediums and techniques. In this workshop, designed for all levels, you will learn classic encaustic painting processes as well as how to add oils, pastels, charcoal, graphite, watercolor, and collage, photos, mixed media, and texture! You will come away with enough information to safely set-up your own encaustic studio, an equipment list, sources of supply, and a head full of new techniques and ideas. The only suggestion she ever gets about her classes is: “make them longer!”
SUPPLIES: Most supplies and tools are included to enable you to experience this fabulous medium without making a huge investment. Includes, but not limited to: griddles, heat guns, scraping tools, encaustic paint, brushes, mixed media supplies, collage materials. A list of optional materials is sent upon registration. If you would like to preview this list, please contact Karen Eide Studios. Materials beyond the scope of the workshop will be the responsibility of the student.
LOCATION: Karen Eide Studios - McGuffey Art Center - Studio 22B. Depending on the location classes are limited to 6 - 8 people. There is ample time for individual attention to your personal goals and pursuits. (If you would like to meet before class begins to clarify your direction and any additional materials you may need please message Karen). There are many hotels and fabulous restaurants in the area, as well as wineries, breweries, Monticello, Second Street Gallery, the Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection, and the Fralin Museum of Art at UVA.
CANCELLATION POLICY Charlottesville location: Full refund if canceled 14 days or more before class. Student will be rescheduled for a subsequent class/date if canceled within less than 14 days. Rescheduling is based on availability. It is the responsibility of the student to contact Karen Eide Studios to make these arrangements. You have 6 months to reregister for a class. Karen Eide Studios reserves the right to reschedule or cancel classes due to insufficient enrollment (2 student minimum) and unforeseen circumstances such as illness, weather, and family emergencies. Full refund will be issued in these cases. If class is cancelled due to weather, a make-up date will be scheduled.
CANCELLATION POLICY for all other workshop locations: Individual cancellation policies vary between hosting institutions. Please check with them before you register!
